Breast cancer patients looking for a complementary therapy that helps improve their symptoms can certainly rely on yoga, the ancient practice of holistic healing. People with breast cancer need to undergo surgery and require chemotherapy drugs or radiation to prevent the spread of cancerous cells. Post surgery and during drug treatment, patients find it difficult to resume their daily routine. The energy-sapping fatigue accompanied by anxiety and the severe side effects of the prescribed treatment, can be frustrating for a patient. However, the inclusion of yoga in the treatment plan has turned out to be a great lifestyle addition, as it has shown to improve the overall well-being of patients.

How Yoga is Beneficial for Breast Cancer Patients

Relieves Stress The diagnosis of breast cancer leaves patients in a complete state of inner turmoil. It is a stressful time but attending a session of yoga daily will make it easier to cope with the disease. Regular practice of yoga will help transform one's inner turmoil to inner peace. Incorporating yoga in the treatment plan can be helpful to lower stress and is the best way to deal with emotional upheaval associated with cancer diagnosis. The yoga poses are relaxing and provide a sense of calm and peace of mind.

Improves Quality of Life A recent study has shown that yoga helps better the quality of life of breast cancer patients. With yoga, patients feel less fatigued, and have more energy. From promoting better sleep, to improving mood, to relieving anxiety, to increasing efficiency in handling day-to-day activities, yoga does everything to enhance the quality of life and improve the overall health of breast cancer patients.

Alleviates Discomfort of Treatment Getting chemotherapy doses or taking radiation therapy is fraught with numerous side effects. However, patients doing yoga during the treatment are in a better position to deal with its side effects. Patients who have incorporated yoga in their routine have reported improvement in nausea, insomnia and joint pain that often occur while taking chemotherapy drugs. In fact, patients who do yoga regularly, experience lesser side effects. Practicing yoga breathing exercises is a good lifestyle choice that can benefit patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation.

Promotes Flow of Lymph The different yoga postures boost circulation of lymph, a fluid that consists of white blood cells. The lymph fluid is an integral part of the immune system and any disruption in lymph flow causes stagnation of toxins in the body. However, yoga ensures proper flow of lymph, thereby helping to flush off toxins. Thus, the increased lymph flow promotes drainage of toxins, which can also help improve the overall well-being of breast cancer patients.

Improves Muscle Movement Muscle aches, soreness, and stiffness are relatively common in breast cancer patients. With a regular yoga routine, patients can expect improvement in flexibility and range of motion. The different yoga poses that focus on stretching muscles help ease pain and improve soreness in muscles. Better muscle movement and decreased muscle tension are some of the most common benefits of yoga for breast cancer patients.

Scientific Evidence
The research carried out at the University of Texas: M.D. Anderson Cancer Center involved the participation of approximately 60 women who were taking sessions of radiation therapy and had recently undergone breast cancer surgery.

The subjects were divided into two groups. One group participated in a 6-week yoga program, that consisted of breathing techniques, poses and medication. The other group did not take part in any yoga session. After a stipulated period, subjects from both the groups were asked to complete a self-assessment questionnaire. Subjects who participated in the yoga class reported increased capability to engage in physical activities. They were better at carrying out their day-to-day routine. Their ability to exercise such as walking a mile improved. The participants also reported diminished fatigue, increased vigor, and less trouble in getting sleep. On the whole, the overall health of patients who attended the session was better than their counterparts who skipped yoga.

Yoga, when combined with the prescribed treatment can certainly make it a lot easier for patients to cope with the condition. So, practicing yoga regularly can impart wellness and infuse every aspect of life with renewed energy through better health.

Show That You Care: How to Support Someone Diagnosed With Cancer 2017

Supporting someone who is diagnosed or living with cancer can be an uphill task. Many people want to lend a helping hand during these difficult times; however, they are unaware how they should go about it. This F7View article enlists some ways through which you can show that you care and extend your support through this long and arduous journey.

The reason why a seesaw was made for two people is that when you go down, there would always be someone there to lift you up again.
― Ash Sweeney

A person diagnosed with cancer will go through a plethora of emotions. A horde of negative feelings, including anxiety, depression, and fear are experienced. As a well-wisher, you are unable to understand the emotional and physical turmoil of the person with cancer. You are at a loss of words and scared that you may offend or hurt the sentiments of the person or his family members. However, being concerned, you want to reach out and show that you care.

For a cancer patient, support from loved ones, friends, or even acquaintances is very important. Here are a few tips that will help you support someone with this dreadful disease.
Note.― It should be noted that the usage of male pronouns is only for convenience of reading.

Prepare Yourself First

Extending your support is important; however, you yourself have to be strong to begin with. The first thing is to compose your thoughts and feelings. You need to prepare yourself by facing your own fears and dealing with your own emotional upheaval. Once you have accepted and faced your fears, only then you will be able to lend a helping hand to someone with cancer.

Listen Every person's experience with cancer will be unique. Being a patient listener to whatever he has to say will help him the most. Talking about his fears, feelings, and even death may make you uncomfortable; however, by expressing emotions, he will feel comforted. These thoughts have probably been troubling him a lot and giving him many sleepless nights. After listening to his thoughts, you will get to know many ways in which you can be of help. Avoid making banal comments and comparisons which are bound to hurt the sentiments and your relationship with the affected person.

Acknowledgement of FeelingsUnderstanding and patience is what you will need the most when dealing with your loved one who is diagnosed with cancer. This is just the beginning, and the chemotherapy sessions and radiation treatments will take their toll on the physical and emotional well-being of the person as well as his family. Patience and a shoulder to cry on will work wonders as an excellent way of support during these tough times. Acknowledge his feelings, and if you are at a loss of words or feel afraid about losing your loved one, it is okay to say so. Sharing fears and insecurities is one of the best ways to handle the situation.

Don't Change Your Attitude
It's human nature that whenever someone we know is diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, we tend to distance ourselves from them. It is probably because of the fear of death and insecurity. However, remember that the person needs your support now. Don't change your behavior towards him. Try to be normal and supportive. Don't let the person feel isolated and alone. A warm hug, holding of hands, or a reassuring pat on the back will be appreciated and needed. Be yourself, and don't let these unfortunate turn of events change your attitude towards that someone.

Help with Chores
Helping with daily chores or offering practical help is one of the most considerate ways of lending a helping hand.

» You can cook a meal for the family. You can also help by cleaning the house, mowing the lawn, taking care of the garden, collecting groceries and other accessories, washing and ironing clothes, or looking after pets.
» You can offer to take care of the kids. This will give him some privacy. He/she can spend some quality time with his/her spouse. You can also arrange a date.
» If that someone is well enough to go out of the house, you can plan a small get-together or an outing. He will be happy being with friends, and humor and some fun work wonders to ease the pain.

Small Gestures Make a Difference Cancer treatment is exhaustive and tiring. Understand this, and let the person enjoy as much rest as possible. In order to bring some change in the routine, you can spring a surprise with some thoughtful gifts which will lift his spirits.
» If he is feeling up to it, you can gift him some good books, magazines, or puzzle books to read and keep him engaged. Give inspirational song CDs or a compilation of his favorite songs. You could gift MP3 players too.

» Bring some movies, and watch them together or take him out for lunch. Go for a walk to the park or for a long drive.
» Send flowers, cards, notes, etc., to show your concern, and keep the person motivated. Remember birthdays, anniversaries, and dates that mean a lot to the person. You can give some pleasant surprises to him on these days.

Although these are small ways of expressing concern, they go a long way in extending your support and help.

Financial Help
Cancer treatment is often expensive and drills a huge hole in the financial resources. You can help by paying some bills or buying stamps for him. You can organize a fundraiser. Research and contact a financial planner or help with any insurance issues that may come up. Relieving some of the financial stress will ease a lot of his burden.

Be Accommodating During Treatment SessionsThe fight with cancer is a difficult and strenuous battle. The treatment sessions are often very exhaustive, tiring, and painful. As a supporter, you need to bear in mind when to give space, so that he can rest. It is best to avoid phone calls, visits, and any unnecessary disturbances during these times. Please let him take as much time to recuperate and recover after a chemotherapy session. Do not pressurize the person at such times. Give him the much-needed space.

Other Ways to Help
» Offer to take your loved one to the doctor for appointments. Be with him, and patiently hear what the doctor says. Research about the illness, and ask questions.
» Pick up medications or reports. Help him organize these reports and bills, so that he doesn't have to worry about something being misplaced.

» Help the cancer patient reach out to others who are going through the same situation. A different level of compassion and understanding is gained by connecting with people who have experienced and faced this challenge in life. Help him be a part of a support group, or contact cancer activists to help him. This should only be done if the patient is willing to participate in these activities.

Arrange the timings and schedules amidst your friends, family members, and other supporters. Commit only if you are able to fulfill your promise. The person will be entirely dependent on you. Do not take the responsibility if you have other priorities. You can show your care and concern through some other means.

Do Not Ignore Yourself Eating healthy and taking care of yourself is equally important. Taking rest, relaxing, exercising, and finding ways to ease your stress and tension will help you take better care of the person with cancer. Caring for a person with chronic diseases is draining and sometimes takes a toll on the supporters as well. Hence, it is very critical for a supporter to take care of himself and remain fit, healthy, and strong at all times.

Caring for a patient diagnosed with cancer can be a repetitive and exhaustive process. It takes a long time, and you should be prepared for the changes in his moods, appearance, and behavior. Feelings of resentment, bitterness, guilt, and other negative emotions should never be allowed to take you down or affect you in any way. This may do more harm than good, even after the crisis is over. Remember that giving up your own desires or needs won't help anyone. Take time once in a while to pamper yourself and indulge in any activity that de-stresses and rejuvenates you.

Care and support is needed in these tough situations, and any gesture―whether big or small―will be appreciated. Whatever you plan to do, just listen to your heart and reach out to someone you know who is diagnosed with cancer. Patience, understanding, strength, and most importantly, being there for the person through his ups and downs will help him sail through rough waters.

Torn Bicep Muscle Pain 2017

Torn bicep muscle is a painful condition that mostly occurs due to overuse of the bicep muscles. It is important to understand the various causes behind this condition, so that the appropriate treatment measures are put into place.

here are basically two types of bicep muscle tears, the partial and the complete tears. While a partial bicep muscle tear will not completely sever the tendon from the bone, complete tear will result in splitting the tendon into two pieces. Initial damage to the tendon may be in the form of fraying. However, if the activities causing the fraying are not checked, it can progress to a partial or complete tendon tear. Recognizing the muscle injury can help you provide appropriate treatment and prevent such injuries in future.

What Causes Bicep Muscles to Tear?

Injury
Injuries to the arm are the most common cause of torn muscles. In instances where you fall hard on an outstretched arm or lift something too heavy, you can tear your bicep tendon. Usually an injury that occurs with heavy weightlifting or sports in middle-aged men leads to distal biceps tendon ruptures, at the elbow joints. In addition, there are many jobs which require heavy overhead lifting and subject the tendons to excess wear and tear.

Overuse
Many times the wearing down and fraying of the bicep muscles that occurs slowly over time, can lead to a tear in the bicep muscles. Although, this usually happens with age, overuse and activities that strain your shoulder can cause not only the muscles to tear but also other shoulder problems which include tendonitis, shoulder impingement and rotator cuff injury. Repetitive overhead sports, such as swimming or tennis can lead to muscle fatigue and increase the chances of the fraying of the bicep muscles.

Age
Age can also be a factor for fraying of the bicep tendon, with older people having put up more years of wear and tear on their tendons.

Medication
Using certain corticosteroid medicines can lead to muscle and tendon weakness. In case of a situation where long-term and continuous use of such medicines is necessary, this weakness may aggravate, causing the tendons to fray and ultimately tear.

Identifying a Torn Bicep Muscle

The most common symptom of a muscle tear is a sudden and sharp pain in the upper arm, accompanied by the cramping of the arm even after usage that is otherwise tolerable in a healthy individual. Sometimes, when the muscle detaches itself from the bones, you can hear an audible "pop!" There is also muscle pain and tenderness at the shoulders and elbows. Most of the time, there is a difficulty in turning the palm up or down. Due to the tearing of the muscles, a bulge or a bruise may appear on the upper arm.

Diagnosis

Complete ruptures of the bicep muscles causes deformities of the arm muscle. However, as opposed to that, partial ruptures of the muscles are usually difficult to detect. For diagnosing it, the doctor may ask you to bend your arm and tighten the biceps muscle. Pain while using your bicep muscle may mean there is a partial tear.

Based on the severity of the injury, the treatment options will vary. While some injuries require non steroidal medications and physical therapy to heal and get restored to the original condition, serious bicep tendon injuries might require surgery. For those who suspect torn bicep muscles, the best advice is to see the doctor immediately. Remember, that when you workout while in pain, the injury may only worsen leading to a permanent damage.

Normal Blood Sugar Levels for Women 2016-17

Normal blood sugar levels for women is 70 to 140 mg/dL, when blood sugar is measured randomly at any time of the day. However, the normal level of blood sugar can be different when it is measured after fasting. The following article.

lucose is the main source of energy and is derived from carbohydrates. Whenever we eat carbohydrate foods, they are broken down or metabolized into simple sugar molecules, known as glucose. From the bloodstream, glucose enters the body cells and tissues. This process is facilitated by the hormone insulin, secreted by the beta cells of the pancreas. Whenever we eat food, the level of glucose in blood rises, which in turn stimulates the pancreas to release insulin. Insulin then enables the cells and tissues of the body to absorb glucose from the bloodstream. As a result, the level of blood sugar drops down to the normal level. In this way, the level of blood sugar is maintained at a normal range.

Normal Blood Glucose Levels for Women

The level of blood sugar can fluctuate to an extent throughout the day. As has been mentioned already, the blood sugar levels rise after meals. Normally, the level of blood sugar is lower in the morning, and then rises after meals. Therefore, more than one test is used to measure the level of blood sugar in both men and women. Blood sugar levels are measured in two ways, either randomly throughout the day or after fasting.

  • Random Blood Sugar Test: In general, the range of normal blood sugar, when measured randomly throughout the day is 70 to 140 mg/dL. For women, normal blood sugar levels after eating can be around 135 to 140 mg/dL. Sometimes, the level can go up to 180 mg/dL within one hour from the time of eating a meal.
  • Fasting Blood Sugar Test: The normal range for fasting blood sugar levels for women is 70 to 100 mg/dL. The fasting blood sugar level is measured after fasting for at least eight hours. To measure this blood sugar level, an individual is required not to eat or drink anything (except water) for at least 8 hours.
  • 2-hour Postprandial Blood Sugar Test: The level of blood sugar can rise slightly above the normal level for about one or two hours after eating a meal. The 2-hour postprandial test is used to measure the normal blood sugar levels two hours after eating a meal. The normal result for this test is 70 to 145 mg/dL.
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test: To perform this test, an individual is required to fast for a few hours, after which he or she is given a sugar solution to drink. After an hour a blood test is performed, which is then repeated after an hour or two. The values below 140 mg/dL are considered as the normal values for this test.

What do the Results of Blood Sugar Tests Mean?

  • Blood sugar levels can be affected by many factors, which can vary from one individual to another. Therefore, only a certified physician has the knowledge and expertise to interpret the results of various blood sugar tests.

Random Blood Sugar Test

  • If the level of blood sugar is below 70 mg/dL, then it is normally referred to as hypoglycemia or low blood sugar.
  • A value higher than 140 mg/dL is considered as suggestive of hyperglycemia. As the random blood sugar test checks glucose levels throughout the day, the results can vary, but a large variation may indicate a problem.

Fasting Blood Sugar Test
  • A high value up to 125 mg/dL is considered to indicate prediabetes.
  • A value higher than 125 mg/dL is suggestive of type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

2-hour Postprandial Blood Sugar Test

  • The normal range for people who are less than 50 years of age is 70 to 145 mg/dL. Since the range increases by 10 mg/dL every 10 years after 50 years, the normal range for the elderly is higher.
  • Though this test is not really used for diagnosis of diabetes, elevated levels may indicate diabetes.

Oral Glucose Intolerance Test

  • If the levels are in the range of 140 to 199 mg/dL, then it may suggest prediabetes.
  • Levels above 200mg/dL can be indicative of diabetes.

So, this is all about normal blood sugar levels for women. The normal range for blood sugar is usually same for both men and women. While interpreting the results of various blood sugar tests, it should be kept in mind that a single abnormal reading may not indicate diabetes or other conditions, which are characterized by abnormal increase or decrease in the level of blood sugar. Sometimes, certain factors can affect the level of blood sugar in women and men. Factors like age, health condition, use of certain medications, or alcohol use can affect the results of various blood sugar tests. Therefore, before coming to any conclusion, it is advisable to get the results properly evaluated by a physician.

And yet, core strengthening exercises are one of the most neglected areas of a workout routine, even amongst people who exercise regularly! Fitness gurus in the past stressed on getting the body aerobically conditioned, and concentrated on working out the larger groups of muscles of the arms and the legs. Core strength exercises were a mere sideline of the main routine, in the form of a few crunches. It is only recently that the importance of core exercises has been given due recognition and importance.

Your core comprises the muscles of your trunk and pelvis, which include the abdominal muscles, the oblique muscles, the muscles in your pelvic area such as your hip-flexors, and the muscles of your lower and upper back. A feeble core makes you vulnerable to injury, pain in the lower back, poor balance and posture. Hence, as is evident, core strengthening exercises are vital for the overall conditioning of your body. Following are the benefits of core strengthening exercises:
  • Provides protection for your back due to the bracing effect of strengthening the core muscles
  • Provides core stability because of your trunk becoming stronger
  • Stabilizes your center of gravity
  • Improves your posture, balance and shape
  • Improves your performance during exercise and sports activities
  • Makes you less susceptible to back pain and injuries

With core strengthening exercises you will develop the strong core you require to enable you to do anything and everything with ease, such as climbing stairs, running, walking, lifting heavy objects, or something as simple as sitting with your back straight. Core strengthening exercises are especially beneficial for sportspeople. This is because the core stability that develops with core strengthening results in the muscles in your abdominal region, hips, and back working harmoniously together, making any movement seem effortless

8 Exercises to Strengthen Your Core
So, how do you go about strengthening your core? Well, here are a few core strength training exercises that will help you to do just that:

1. Crunches: Lie down flat on the floor with your knees bent and your hands either behind your head or crossed on top of your chest. First take a few deep breaths, then, contracting your abdominal muscles, lift your head and shoulders up, bringing your chest towards your raised thighs. Lower your head and shoulders back slowly to the floor. Repeat 10-15 times.

2. Reverse Crunches: Lie flat on your back, your hands behind your head. Lift both your legs up, bending your knees so that the lower portion of your legs are parallel to the floor. Now, contracting your abdominal muscles, lift your pelvis off the floor, bringing your knees towards your chest. Then, without relaxing the contraction in your abs, lower feet to the floor. Repeat 5-8 times. Then relax by straightening your body out. You can repeat another set or two. Remember to keep breathing during the exercise, and not allow your back to arch.

3. Ball Crunches: The exercise ball is one of the best tools for performing core strength exercises. Lie on the ball, with your lower back resting on it, with your hands behind your head and your feet resting on the floor. Contracting your abs, curl your upper body towards your hips. Return to the previous position. Repeat 5-8 times. The tricky part is keeping the ball stable while doing this exercise. This is what strengthens your core muscles.

4. Oblique Cross-over Crunches: Lie flat on your back, with your right hand behind your head, and your left hand stretched out on the floor for support. Your right knee should be bent, with the foot on the floor. Put your left foot on the right knee. Now lift the upper part of your body off the floor, twisting toward the left, crunching your right elbow and shoulder in the direction of your left knee. Return to the starting position and repeat this 5-8 times. Then switch sides.

5. Air Bicycling: Lie on your back, with your hands behind your head, and your knees bent with your feet flat on the floor. Lift the upper part of your body, while straightening out your right leg and bringing your left knee towards your chin, while simultaneously taking your right elbow towards your bent left knee. Then, switch sides. All these actions should be performed in a smooth, seamless fashion. Continue to alternate sides as if you are bicycling in the air. Do this 8-12 times.

6. Plank: This exercise works the entire core muscles, including your upper and lower body. Lie down flat, facing the floor. Now bending your elbows, and placing your forearms and palms flat on the floor, lift your whole body off the floor, so that you are resting only your forearms and toes. Maintain this position, tightening your core muscles, for about 30 seconds.

7. Back Extensions with Balls: Lie on the exercise ball, facing downwards, and positioning it beneath your hips, your toes resting on the floor. Now lift your torso up, extending your hands on either side, until your body straightens out. Take care to align your body so that your head, shoulders, neck, and the rest of your back are in a straight plane. Return to the starting position and repeat. Do this 8-10 times, being careful not to hyperextend your back.

8. Butt Lifts: Lie down fat on your back, with your hands resting on the floor, palms down, on either side. Bend your knees, putting your feet flat on the floor. Now, squeezing your gluteal muscles and your lower abs, lift your hips off the floor. Return to the starting position. Repeat 8-12 times. You could add weights on your hips to add to the intensity. A great exercise to tone both your back and abdominal muscles.

For optimum results, do your core strengthening exercises three times in a week. Since the position of the body and its alignment are vital aspects of core exercises, it is advisable to get professional help from a fitness trainer, especially if you are a beginner.

Projectile Vomiting in Infants 2017

Infant vomiting is very common, as babies usually spit up a small amount of the ingested food. But, projectile vomiting in babies could be dangerous, if it is persistent or severe. Read on...

Most of us are familiar with the fact that infants vomit or spit up after feedings. This is very common in babies and parents do not worry about it, though it is inconvenient and annoying for them. However, in some infants, vomiting could be a cause of worry. For example, projectile vomiting in infants could be dangerous, as it may indicate some serious medical condition. Parents must have a basic idea about the different types of vomiting in infants, in order to differentiate between them and identify projectile vomiting.

Vomiting in Infants

As mentioned earlier, vomiting can be of three types, as far as infants are concerned. They include reflux, posseting and projectile vomiting. The first type called reflux, occurs when the valve that controls the entry of the food from the esophagus to the stomach opens up in between and allows the contents in the stomach to enter the esophagus and come out through the mouth. This reflux is common in infants and most of them outgrow this condition as they become toddlers. Posseting is another common type of vomiting in infants, wherein babies vomit small amounts of ingested food, right after feeding. The most severe among the three types is projectile vomiting, which is the forceful expulsion of food consumed by the baby.

What is Projectile Vomiting

This type of vomiting is characterized by forceful expulsion of food, that too in considerable amounts. The vomit is expelled with much force, that it forms an arc shape. It is more common in infants, but can be seen in adults too. Occasional projectile vomiting is considered normal, but when it happens regularly, it could be an indication of some serious medical condition. Both breast-fed and bottle-fed babies are prone to this type of vomiting. If your baby is showing the following symptoms along with persistent projectile vomiting, you have to consult a pediatrician at the earliest:

  1. Weight loss and irritability
  2. Presence of bile or blood in the vomit
  3. Dehydration symptoms like dry mouth and weakness
  4. The baby looks unwell or seems to be in pain
  5. Coughing or choking spells
  6. Hunger after vomiting
  7. Belching and bloated stomach

Causes

Even though, gastroesophageal reflex is said to be one of the common causes of vomiting in infants, it is uncommon for a baby with this condition to develop projectile vomiting. Breastfeeding is recommended for such infants. Usually, treatment is not given as the babies outgrow this condition with age. In some infants, milk allergy could be a reason for this problem.

More serious causes of projectile vomiting in infants include stomach flu or gastroenteritis, which is an intestinal infection caused by a virus. Another serious medical condition associated with this type of vomiting in infants is pyloric stenosis, which is characterized by thickening of the muscle (pylorus muscle) that is located at the lower section of the stomach, where it opens to the small intestine. In such cases, the enlarged pylorus muscle prevents the food in the stomach to enter the small intestine. This causes projectile vomiting right after feeding or after several hours of feeding. The symptoms of this condition include constant crying, refusal to eat food, wheezing, slow weight gain, dehydration due to vomiting, etc. Studies show that three out of every 1000 infants develop this condition, which is more prevalent in males. Usually, this condition develops after four to six weeks of birth. It is treated with pyloromyotomy, a surgery performed to relieve the obstruction. In some infants, projectile vomiting is caused by congenital abnormalities of the intestinal tract.

Preventive Measures

While occasional projectile vomiting is not a cause of worry, if it is persistent, it can cause dehydration, fever, injury to the esophagus and stomach, slow growth rate, and sometimes, pneumonia as well. Hence, it is necessary to take your baby to the pediatrician at the earliest. If the doctor rules out the possibility of any serious underlying cause, you can try the following measures to prevent such vomiting.

  • Feed the baby with small amounts of food, but increase the frequency of feeding.
  • The baby should be in an upright position while feeding and for at least twenty minutes after feeding.
  • Gently pat on the baby's back frequently while feeding, so that he burps. This reduces the gastric pressure in the stomach, which can cause vomiting.
  • Minimize vigorous movements of the baby after feeding and elevate the head of the baby's bed at 30 degrees.

Projectile vomiting in infants should be monitored carefully and should not be left untreated. In case your baby develops this condition, it is advisable to consult a pediatrician immediately.

Female to Male HIV Transmission F7view Article 2017

It is believed that female to male HIV transmission rates are lower than the other way round. Let us delve deeper into this subject of HIV transmission probability through the following F7view  article.

HIV kills millions of people all over the world, and infects several others. It remains the most dreaded disease of the 21st century. The fact that HIV/AIDS has no permanent cure makes it even more threatening. Attempts are being made to control the rapid spread of this disease. There are several government and private agencies, which publish information on HIV transmission statistics from time to time. These statistics are often indicative of the extent to which HIV has spread in our society, and what are the most affected groups.

Female to Male Transmission of HIV

According to the statistics, out of the total cases of HIV, about 75% constitute for male patients. HIV transmission rate is highest for male to male transmission. Anal sex has been identified as the primary cause of such high transmission rates among homosexual males. The mucus membranes in the anal region rupture while having anal sex, thereby increasing the risk of viral exposure. During vaginal intercourse, this risk is greatly minimized. However, it is still there for heterosexual couples, who indulge in anal sex.

HIV transmission is dependent upon viral load, the stage of infection, type of body fluid transmitted, presence of any other sexually transmitted disease, and so on. Viral load is more in genital fluids, blood, etc., as compared to tears, sweat, saliva and other body fluids. During a female to male intercourse, the uninfected man is at much lesser risk of contracting the infection, as the amount of infected woman's cervical fluid exposed to him does not contain enough viral load to actually cause infection. This is primarily the reason why female to male transmission is possible only in 0.05% to 0.1% as compared to male to female transmission, which is 0.08% to 0.19%. The risk increases with multiple, unknown partners.

Incidentally, the risk of female to male HIV transmission also increases when the infected woman is pregnant. Suppressed immune system and increased viral load are the two factors responsible for the increased risk of transmission in this case. Besides, the minimal use of condom during pregnancy also contributes to the risk of infection to healthy males from infected women. Also, the risk increases with an infected woman who is also suffering from STDs like genital herpes. These diseases provide a free access to the virus directly to the lymph nodes. Men suffering from genital herpes can also easily contract disease from their HIV infected female partners. Also, uncircumcised males are considered to be at a higher risk of contracting HIV than their circumcised counterparts.

Ways to Control the Spread

Although, transmission rates for HIV are far less in female to male contact, you still carry a risk of contracting the infection with your every unprotected sexual encounter. Using a condom not only shields you from HIV infection, but also protects you against several other STDs. One can also use female condoms, however, male condoms are most effective as barriers. Also, avoid unprotected anal sex with any woman whose HIV status is not known. Considering the extent to which HIV/AIDS affects the life of people suffering from this disease, the precautions mentioned above are worth taking.

Although, it is a dreaded disease, which is spreading at an alarming rate, people should not worry themselves unnecessarily. An educated and conscious approach is required to curb the spread of the disease. If you take due care and precautions to prevent the spread of HIV, then you need not worry too much about contracting it. And, the simplest way of relieving yourself of all the stress and anxiety is having protected sexual intercourse!

Sex Education in Schools Pros and Cons F7view Article 2017

Whether sex education in schools has more pros or cons is a never ending debate. Let's read arguments for both, pros and cons, in this article and hopefully you'll be able to take a stand.

Sex education is one of the most controversial issues in education, that has been hovering over educational institutions since ages. It is probably the most debated topic, that will always have a divided opinion. Some people will always agree and some will always disagree. Try though everyone may, it is almost impossible to shrug off the responsibility of informing students about its importance. Problems like teen pregnancy and STDs rise due to unsafe sex, and one of the best ways to avoid it, is by educating the students about it. Let us see some pros and cons of sex education in schools in this F7view article.

The Debate

Most of us limit the scope of sex education by taking it at its face value. It is not just about sex. It involves other delicate issues like sexual health, sexual reproduction, sexuality and others that parents often feel awkward to talk about with their children. Hence, it becomes the responsibility and the duty of schools to take up this topic, and inform and educate the students about it as much as they can. However, this is almost never taken in the right spirit by parents and students themselves. They begin deliberation on the pros and cons of sex education in schools, and form an attitude towards it based on what they think is right. Let us see some of these arguments and then decide for ourselves.

Pros

Statistics show that more than 50% of American teenagers lose their virginity by the age of 17. It also shows that sex education in schools is well accepted by only 7% of American parents. The other 93% still consider it a taboo to talk about sex to their children, and resort to making up the ever popular stories of birds and bees. But do they stop for a moment and think that it is not the presence of sex education in schools, but its absence that has made the rate of teen pregnancy go up to such a high level? Given below are some more arguments for sex education.

Stress on Abstinence

Most schools that do provide sex education, have an 'abstinence is the best solution' approach to it. They stress on abstinence as the perfect way to be totally free from any problems whatsoever, related to sex and sexuality. Which actually makes sense. We all believe that prevention is better than cure, so why not just wait for the right age to engage in sexual activity. The two most important things that you need to be sexually active, namely the mind and the body, are not fully matured when kids are in school. It puts them in grave danger, physically and psychologically. Hence stressing the importance of restraint and abstinence through sex education is a great advantage.

Birth Control

Schools that don't use the abstinence approach, prefer to go the 'safe sex' way. They have accepted the fact that the sexual activities of teenagers and even pre-teens cannot be controlled by a mere class taken in school. They know that the students have other resources thanks to the various forms and forums of information that are available today. So the schools would rather give them tips on how to engage in safe sex, by using appropriate birth control measures if they are sexually active, than preaching abstinence. They train them on using different methods of birth control, and also the dangers of teenage pregnancy.

Information about STDs

It is only through education in schools, that students will get proper and honest information about sexually transmitted diseases. The grave dangers that these diseases pose to them, the physical and mental torture that they may have to go through if they fall prey to an STD, not to mention the social stigma associated with them, are well explained. This instills in the students a sense of responsibility that creeps out of fear for their health and life. As a result they behave more responsibly.

Cons

Though the pros may seem like very valid reasons to vouch for it, there are certain people who believe that sex is better left to be understood by teenagers themselves if at all, or worse, through unreliable sources. Hence, they strongly oppose the idea of sex education in schools. Let us see some of the arguments against it now.

Lack of Sincerity

It is often seen that sex education is not taken seriously. Students tend to look at it as a subject of ridicule, and either don't attend the classes, or if made compulsory, either engage in snickering and giggling, throughout. They seem to be aware of much more than the person who's teaching them about it, thanks to numerous movies, sitcoms, and other media, propagating sex as a style statement. The sensationalizing of sex in school has reached such a level that teens will engage in sex, just to prove how 'cool' and 'popular' they can be. There's little that sex ed can do for them. And it's not just the students, but the faculty too. If they really want to take education about sex to a whole new level of understanding and importance, then they should have more than the customary classes that they do, and hire people who are trained and well informed to teach the students about it.
Religious Beliefs and Sentiments

Many groups of people believe that when it comes to sex education, the cons outweigh the pros, for one very simple reason. They believe, beyond a doubt, that their children should not be exposed to something as crude as sex, in their school days because their religion does not permit it. It goes against their religious beliefs and sentiments, and they do not accept it, on principle. It becomes very difficult to argue with people when they bring religion to the forefront. And so, many schools prefer to leave this sensitive issue untouched.

Misinterpretation of 'Education'

As opposed to 'abstinence only' education, when schools propagate safe sex, they run the risk of having their information misinterpreted by the students. We will all agree that we can listen to hours and hours of lecturing about any topic, but finally do exactly what we want. Unfortunately, it is the same with sex education. Students may listen to the lecturers going on and on about safe sex, but in the end, engage in unsafe sex. They will justify saying that they learned about it in school, and that if teachers did not want them to engage in sexual activities, they never should have brought up the topic in the first place. Curiosity can make them take foolish steps which they will undoubtedly regret later.

As you can see, the possibility of a consensus on the debate about whether or not sex education in schools is a acceptable or not is something that will take a while to happen. Until then, all we can do is hope that the children realize their responsibilities towards their bodies and towards their minds.

List of Heart Conditions 2017

The human heart performs the vital function of pumping oxygenated blood to various parts of the body. This F7view article provides a list of medical conditions that affect the heart.

The heart is a muscular organ that pumps oxygen-rich blood, which is carried by arteries to different parts of the body. It is composed of four chambers called right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle, and left ventricle. The atria are the two upper chambers of the heart, whereas the ventricles are lower chambers of the heart. Heart valves are present between the right atrium and right ventricle, and left atrium and left ventricle. These prevent the backflow of blood. The heart receives its own supply of blood from the coronary arteries. If the heart doesn't receive sufficient amount of blood, or it is unable to pump blood, it could have an adverse effect on one's health. Heart conditions can adversely affect the quality of life of an individual. At times, these conditions could turn out be life-threatening. Poor dietary habits, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, etc., are some of the contributing factors behind the increase in the incidence of heart diseases. The following sections provides a list of some common and rare heart conditions.

Types of Heart Conditions

Medical conditions of the heart can be categorized according to the part of the organ that is affected.

Heart Chambers
Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart muscle is unable to pump sufficient amount of blood. It could occur due to a systolic or diastolic dysfunction.

Heart Muscle
When the heart muscle (myocardium) becomes inflamed, one is diagnosed with myocarditis. The deterioration in the ability of the heart muscle to contract is referred to as cardiomyopathy. The different types of cardiomyopathies include:

➠ Restrictive cardiomyopathy
➠ Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
➠ Dilated cardiomyopathy

Heart Valves
There are a number of problems that could develop due to a defect in the functioning of the heart valves. These include:

➠ Mitral stenosis
➠ Mitral valve regurgitation
➠ Mitral valve prolapse
➠ Aortic stenosis
➠ Tricuspid regurgitation
➠ Tricuspid stenosis

Arteries and Veins
Heart diseases or disorders that are caused due to hardening or blockage of the arteries are listed below.

➠ Angina
➠ Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
➠ Coronary artery disease/Ischemic heart disease
➠ Atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries that affects the blood supply to the heart)

Electrical Conduction
Conditions that develop due to problems in the electrical system of the heart are known as arrhythmias. These arrhythmias mostly cause tachycardia (abnormally rapid heartbeat). The different types of arrhythmias include:

➠ Sinus tachycardia
➠ Sinus bradycardia
➠ Atrial fibrillation
➠ AV block
➠ Premature atrial contractions (PAC)
➠ Atrial flutter
➠ Supraventricular tachycardia
➠ Multifocal atrial tachycardia

Heart Lining
The membrane that lines the cavities of the heart and forms a part of the heart valves is known as endocardium, whereas the serous double membrane surrounding the heart is called pericardium. These could get inflamed, giving rise to conditions called:

➠ Endocarditis
➠ Pericarditis

Congenital Heart Disease

Congenital heart disease is a heart condition that an individual is born with, due to certain genetic defects or alterations. Congenital heart disease may affect any part or function of this organ. It is categorized separately only because the causative factor for this disorder is genetic or inborn. These include:

➠ Hypoplasia
➠ Obstruction defects
➠ Septal defects
➠ Cyanotic defects

Each of the aforementioned defects could adversely affect the heart function.

Rare Heart Conditions

A list of rare heart diseases is given below:

➠ Atrial Myxoma
➠ Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
➠ Long QT Syndrome
➠ Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome
➠ Supraventricular tachycardia
➠ Atrial flutter

Unless congenital, maintaining a healthy and strong heart is completely in your hands. Following a balanced diet that maintains the cholesterol in the reference range, and exercising regularly would lower the risk for heart conditions, as well as other medical conditions.
